Chief designer of the Volkswagen Group, Walter Maria De Silva and Audi Concept Design in Munich, together with Italian furniture manufacturer Poltrona Frau designed Luft chair. Luft (translated from German as “air”) was the epitome of the synthesis of exclusive design by Walter de Silva, the Audi company’s innovative technologies, and consistent quality of Poltrona Frau.

Luft is a light and weightless chair handmade of soft leather and designed to provide its owner perfect leisure. Solid aluminum detail forms legs and backrest; curved and raised armrests resemble bird wings, which gives the chair a floating form.

Curved line passes through the chair – from the back to the legs – and also serves as its base. Due to the elegant shape and lightness of the material it gives the impression that the whole structure is floating in the air. Armrests and seat also form a curved line resembling the outstretched wings of a bird, and the high quality leather upholstery by Pelle Frau is a real adornment.

The Luft chair is implemented with the combined experience of three partners – designer Walter de Silva, the company Poltrona Frau and Audi Concept Design Studio. They all share a love for design, commitment to high quality standards and commitment to excellence.

The uniqueness of this project lies in the combination of invaluable experience in the handmade work by craftsmen of Poltrona Frau and the research, experimental approach, and conceptual methods of Audi design studio. The main objective of the partnership is to ensure a perfect balance between handmade work of craftsmen and high technology.

The basic concept of the project is the creation of a comfortable chair for relaxation. On the one hand, the strict shape of the chair represents order and discipline, but it is just perfect for relaxing, which is so necessary at the end of the day. This idea is reflected in everything – from the choice of materials to the design development.

The project was implemented after two years of research. Roberto Archetti, brand director of Poltrona Frau, said that developing the Luft model together with Walter de Silva and a team of designers from Audi was a complicated, important and exciting project, which has significantly enriched their experience.
