How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Share |

Hardwood floors are made of timber or bamboo and can be given a shiny wax or urethane coating for a smooth reflective surface. Since hardwood flooring is quiet an investment you really should learn how to maintain and protect it from dirt, damage and wearing. As any wooden things hardwood floors do not stand water so keep water to a complete minimum while mopping and cleaning the floors. The furniture should be equipped with special rubber protectors that prevent scratching. When cleaning the hardwood floors use only special neutral cleansers and detergents, but not polishers.

How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Protection

Just like with parquet floors hardwood flooring should be protected with mats and rugs in high traffic and use areas. The shoes especially those with heels and cleats should be left at the doorway. To prevent scratching the furniture should be moved properly, either lifted or with a rug spread beneath it for protection.

Maintenance

In order to prevent swelling and cracking wipe out thoroughly any water spills. Sweep or vacuum the floors regularly to remove the dirt and dust. Pick up any debris or little stones that may have stuck in your shoe sole as it may fall out and scratch the floors when you will mop or sweep them. Do not use wax or oil-based cleansers, vinegar or ammonia cleansers. Any was, oil or acid-based cleansers will make the coating of the floors look dull and may even cause damage to it.

Hardwood floors react to temperature and humidity levels change so be sure to use humidifier in winters because the heating causes wood to shrink and protect the floors from direct sun rays in summer. If the humidity in summers is too high the ventilation and dehumidifying is needed.

Cleaning

Use a damp mop avoiding excess water. The less water your use the better. You can also spray the cleanser on the floor or terry cloth mop and wipe it out. Make sure the mop is clean before you start the cleaning. Hardwood floors are high-maintenance but with these tips your investment will serve you for a long time.
