Industrial Loft: ‘New Girl’ Set Design

If you’re like us you are probably in love with the industrial loft the characters of the TV show ‘New Girl’ are sharing. The series are set around the Zooey Deschanel’s character Jess who’s sharing a loft with three ma;e roomates who become her friends as the show evolves. The show is set in a warehouse building and the loft interior with classic exposed brick and the wooden beam-covered ceiling.

The main area is divided into three zones with the sitting area that includes a TV, an angled leather sofa, a storage-friendly coffee table anda lounge chair with a matching ottoman. The dining area consists of a wooden tabletop dining table on metal bar legs and differently-colored chairs with a metal pendant lamp hanging over. The kitchen is painted in deep blue and built in wood with appliances like stove and refrigerator and a storage made of metal and stainless steel which helps to maintain the industrial style. The big barn door separates the most rooms from the main area.

We had a studio on one hand that loved to look at the pilot and didn’t want to have anything changed, and a producer on the other hand that understood that you can’t rent stuff for eight months, you have to buy everything.  A lot of the things we brought in where colorful but maybe not so expensive.  A lot of the furniture we brought in was from thrift stores; flee markets, antique stores trying to give it a little rougher edge.  We wanted it to look a little more realistic, and definitely messy,

said the production designer Michael Whetstone in the interview with Resource 411.
