Why do we need a focal point in a room anyway? Why is this design rule is that important for a good interior design? Imagine walking into an absolutely blank room or on the other hand, picture a room where every other thing is drawing attention to itself. The first one will look absolutely dull and uninviting while the second one will look cluttered and overdone. The focal point takes the main focus and attention on itself while the rest of the design subtly spins around it interpreting it in a less intense ways and colors.

How to Choose Focal Point in Your Interior

How to create a great focal point in the room? Look for existing focus points. What makes your room stand out? Big ornate window? A fireplace? A ceiling medallion? Play with it. Choose beautiful curtains for your big window or think about how to further decorate your fireplace. Will the artwork above it add to or take from it? What kind of lamp will go well with your ornate ceiling.

However, if your room cannot boast neither of these features you can easily create a focal point wherever you want. A sofa can become a great focal point. Bright upholstery, curved legs, bold throw pillows and a matching coffee table – voila you’ve got a complex focal point in the room. Feature walls make great focal points. You can also create a focal point on one of your walls without covering it with patterns and decorations entirely. Pick the most visible wall in the room and decorate its center with an artwork, photography, wall art, accessories, etc. The furniture and floor coverings can also become main focus of the room. Pick the bright and bold rugs and coffee tables to match nicely the sofa and your focal point is ready.
