Lighting is an essential element of interior design. It does not only provide us with light to function during any time of day but also allows offers numerous design solutions for our home interiors. There are various types of lighting used for different purposes in the interior design. There are also many ways of using lighting to accent or disguise certain parts of the room.

Types of Lighting

Ambient Lighting. Also known as general lighting, ambient lighting lights up the whole room and usually hangs from the ceiling. It can be a chandelier, pendant lamps or built-in light fixtures. When choosing ambient lighting fixtures or any lighting fixtures for that matter, consider the style of the room. It should fit and add to the room decor.

Task Lighting. Task lighting is used for specific areas like kitchen or bathroom to help us perform various daily tasks. Choose task lighting carefully as it should be comfortable to work with, especially when choosing lighting for reading and writing and lighting for children. For instance, flourescent lights flicker a lot and said to be the cause of headaches.

Accent Lighting. Accent lighting is used to accentuate certain elements of the decor. It can be architectural detail or an artwork. Accent lighting is a great way to draw attention to those elements of decor that you like the most.

Decorative Lighting. This type of lighting is used as decoration to the interior design. Decorative lighting fixtures are used as accents because of their designs.

Lighting can also be colorful, though, not very practical in everyday use it can be quite decorative and come in a variety of shapes and forms. The play of light and shade can also give beautiful effects to the room decor. Patterned lamps shape light after the pattern decorating the room of a part of it with beautiful floral twirls or complex geometric light figures.
