Gardening can be fun and as well take your time and money in terms of design and maintenance. But your own summer paradise-like green haven is such a sweet idea. Whether you want to have a vegetable garden or a flower garden the first and foremost thing you need to do is to decide what plants you want to grow. There are numerous of weeds and flowers that require various levels of care, sun exposure and soil. Do not rush to plant the whole garden area with all the various plants on your hands. Choose a small area at the site seen from your house and plant your first flowers or vegetables.

What if soil is not good? The soil can be made good by adding nutrients it needs, organic matter or changing its pH. The soil is the key to a successful garden. It will grow and nurture plants that will decorate your outdoor area. The rest is secondary. Learn about what kind of soil your garden has and what can be done to make it better.

Garden design is something you will have to learn and experiment with. First step to a successful garden design is to set a purpose for it. Is aesthetic or more practical? Will you spend much time their? Is it public or hidden from the others’ view? There are many other purposes for creating a garden. So once you’ve answered all the questions go out and see what plans of yours can actually be realized on the site you have.

You have to make sure that the sun exposure your site gets during a day is enough for the plants you want to grow. How it changes with the seasons, how good or bad the soil is, what’s already planted or growing there and would you like to plant some trees or if there are some how will they affect the future vegetation.

Gardening is more time-consuming than the interior design. The plants require watering, grooming, and soil requires care as well. So if you have very little time for garden then maybe you should opt for low-maintenance plants and garden style.

Choosing a style to design your garden in is part of the designing process. The style should be according to the purpose of your garden. If you will be hosting guests often in the garden then maybe more of a formal style will suit your needs. If you want to simply enjoy the greenery then wild or natural way the vegetation grows will suit your garden.

Plants should be picked carefully by season, texture, foliage and color. Again if you don’t want to spend much time in the garden grooming and caring for flowers choose low-maintenance plants that will look good most times. Choose some anchor plants like evergreens that will add texture to your garden. Some trees are also great as carcass for your garden design.

So here are some gardening basics you need to consider and find out about the site of your future garden. First of all, it’s important to know what soil is there. Then decide on what type of garden you want and then and only then proceed to the actual designing process. Evaluating the site is very crucial as the lack of sun or bad soil will ruin all your endeavors of creating a beautiful garden.
