Everybody knows that the vacuum cleaner sucks in the garbage and dust. But now engineers have developed a terrific idea – to use the collected garbage to produce energy required for the vacuum cleaner.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary Casabella presented an unusual robotic vacuum cleaner Limbo at the International Housewares Show 2013 in Chicago (USA). The key advantages of the device are its high permeability, as well as the fact that it draws energy from the collected garbage.

The design of this robotic cleaner was developed by Elliot Cohen and Neil Vincenti. The vacuum cleaner resembles a futuristic tank or a modern Mars rover. Equipped with the wheels Limbo is free to go up and down the stairs, overcoming any obstacles on its path.

Specializing in gadgets for kitchen, Casabella has stripped Limbo of many structural elements of an ordinary vacuum cleaner. The robot does not require long cords or heavy batteries. Instead it uses a process of microbial electrolysis to generate its own electricity. Electricity is generated in a special container where bacteria utilize carbohydrates in the process of anaerobic carbohydrate oxidation.

The device’s package also includes various sensors, front camera and lights. Limbo presently is at the stage of a prototype.

By the way, you may have noticed a certain similarity between the vacuum cleaner Limbo and Mars Rover Curiosity. Designers do not hide the fact that they borrowed a similar form of the legendary robot, created by NASA.

The robotic vacuum cleaner can be a vital tool in any home. Among the advantages of Limbo there are compactness, modern design, low weight and ease of management and operation.

While Limbo is not yet on the market, let’s mention the most popular and objectively best robotic vacuum cleaners. Here are the 5 best robotic vacuum cleaners to date:

1. Roomba 770
2. Neato XV-21
3. CleanMate QQ3-T
4. Roomba 760
5. Neato XV-12
