Barbican was built in the late 1960’s – early 1970’s in the harsh style of brutalism, and since then it has changed little. People either immediately fall in love with this unique place, or hate it with all their heart.

The exhibition contains quite expected works of Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein, etc.  But the first thing you see when entering the exhibition is the chair of Charles and Ray and the stool made of a bicycle saddle by Castiglioni brothers.

It is quite logical to supplement art objects using images of popular culture with the contemporary household items. This consolidation shows, that the artists ironically copy the world, and the world is becoming more like a bright attractive picture painted by artists.

The exposition, which was prepared by Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and the Stockholm Moderna Museet, is the first of its kind.

On one hand, with the emergence of pop art, art came close to home. And on the other hand, due to new materials and enthusiasm of the post-war era, the task of a designer expanded from creating a simple utilitarian objects to attempts to comprehend the world creatively. For example, the Up 5 chair by Gaetano Pesce that is illustrating the subjection of women, is in the same hall with the works of artists, discoursing on themes of feminism.

Date: until February 9, 2014
