Office Made of Containers in Tokyo
This house is assembled of overage of shipping containers, located in the old center of the Torigoe village, Ishikawa District, Tokyo. This area is full of small factories producing leather products and paper products. The idea of creating a house from used containers belongs to one of the customers of the Tomokazu Hayakawa Architects architectural studio, who wanted to have a small office here, and his wife was going to open a small gallery. Worn containers were installed by one of small mills.

CC4441 house in Tokyo designed by Tomokazu Hayakawa Architects
In order not to follow the laws of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), prohibiting the use of containers not for its intended purpose, including for housing, the authors reinforced the containers with internal rigid frame and finished them with wood paneling without changing the appearance of the containers. Among other things, the construction of the new residential building began to correspond to Japanese standards (JIS) concerning earthquake safety.
Old boxes, painted black, are formed in cubic sculptural composition at the crossroads. Two of them are set at an angle to each other and closed by the third one. As a result of such an arrangement they got a pass, looking likea small patio with a metal staircase leading to the second level.
The house seems to be formed of randomly and casually placed figures. However they form an elaborate composition. Massive doors open right on the corner of the street, and the white underside of the interior shows up. It is also is visible through the large windows cut in the walls.
The construction is reinforced by special framing system for reliable operation of the facility with the maximum seismic loads.
