SOM offers to move the Madison Square Garden and to build a green vortex framed with four multipurpose towers. While the tains are moved underground the green space rises above the station as a stadium with a transparent ‘field’.

The transparent dome under the vortex protects the station itself providing with plenty of light.

SHoP Architects offer to move the Penn Station to Hudson Yards to the waterfront. The project is designed to integrate the station with the city and act as a city gateway.

Inside the station there is plenty of natural light that comes from above thanks to special roof design.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro imagine the Penn Station to be a structured and layered space with views of the sky and the city. Filled with various spaces the station becomes an attraction not only to commuters but also shoppers, sports and culture followers.

The roof of the station is covered with grass and walkways for pedestrians as well as there is greenery around the station.

Finally, H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture went for a more traditional look. And they too propose to relocate the Madison Square Garden to the waterfront.

On the inside their Penn Station is enhanced with multiple skylights and windows to bring in the natural illumination.

The station was built back in 1960’s being one of the biggest stations in the Western Hemisphere. With the increasing rate of passengers that pass through the station each day the need for a new, more expansive and modern design has emerged promting Municipal Art Society of New York to seek creative design ideas. What do you think about the new Penn Station proposals? Which one do you like the most?
