Ma Yansong from Chinese MAD studio has presented a master plan of the city of Nanjing in China in a style of the Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism Architecture in Shenzhen. Nanjing is one of the four great ancient capitals of China. Here the buildings are stretched in ridges like mountains, passing in “natural” landscape of streets and squares.

Architect decided to rethink the existing boundaries between the natural environment and the city. Plants smoothly flow into the residential areas, forming a mixture of artificial and natural landscapes. Plastic architecture made the skyscrapers different from their glass and steel analogues. Herbal aesthetics made them a part of the mountain landscape, which is the pride of ancient Nanjing.

The project is based on the concept of “City of Shan-Shui», which is translated from Chinese as “City of Mountains and Rivers”. It is was inspired by Chinese landscape painting.

The created layout shows a scale model of futuristic architecture, combined with the work of landscape art. Two worlds of nature and technology, existing in different dimensions merge together creating a functional urban environment of the future. The total area of this design project is approximately 60 hectares. It is expected, that it will be brought to life in 2017.

The idea of creating ecological paradise in Nanjing looks fantastic especially when you know that today’s Nanjing is a major industrial center of China and the city puts the issue of environmental safety at the forefront. The Government’s program of ecological construction in Nanjing city started in 2010. Within the framework of the program a number of plants were taken out of the city and many industrial enterprises, which are harming the environment, have been closed and the city residents are intensively taking measures on landscaping and forestation.
