Macalister Mansion is a luxury estate located in Penang, Malaysia. The 100 year-old estate was recently redesigned by the Ministry of Design into a luxurious hotel. Named after Penang’s British Governor Colonel Normal Macalister from 1808 to 1810 the mansion stands on the Macalister Road and features various art installations and commisioned pieces about the historic figure.

Mansion Turned Into Hotel

Macalister Mansion is designed around the idea of an old English mansion. Each space is designed to provide hospitaliy of an actual home – good food, fine drink, engaging conversation, soothing music, a good night’s sleep or simply lounging by the pool.

Within Macalister Mansion, each space within its food & beverage outlets together with the hotel is branded as distinct rooms found in a mansion: Dining Room, The Den, Living Room, Bar (Bagan), The Lawn and 8 Rooms.

Thus historic mansion-turned luxury hotel is not like other hotels but it’s not like an actual home either. There are different areas the guests can enjoy. For instance, there is a room with  a pool table, a breakfast area at the window, a cafe and a big white dining room.

There is also a bar and other areas like a swimming pool and outdoor sitting lounge. The mansion is surronded with greenery and the interior is decorated with various art pieces and installations.

The rooms are decorated in different manner but the style is modern for the most part. The walls are light and decor is clean. One of the rooms pictured in the gallery features dramatic columns and a spiral staircase. The bathroom in this particular room is divided from the bedroom with glass walls and designed in mosaic tiles.

The style in the general areas also features various twists whether in design, decor or color. The sitting areas like cafe and a dining room feature colorful chairs while the bar and the den are decorated in different patterns featuring patterned walls and mosaic tile floors.
